BDR5

BDR5, being the highest in protein among local varieties, remains exclusive to the Brunei market. It is ideal for those seeking high-protein and premium-tasting rice.

BDR5 is a local premium rice developed by mixing Laila (IR67406-6-3-2-3) and Pusu during the 2002/2003 season to enhance Pusu’s traits and boost yields for Brunei’s rainy regions. It matures in up to 140 days and yields 3-5 metric tons per hectare. The plant grows to 85.4 cm, has about 14 stalks averaging 24.2 cm, and each 1000 seeds weigh approximately 18.6 grams.

Sembada 188

Sembada 188 offers exceptional carbs, protein, calories, and is known for its low fat content – making it a nutritious choice for white rice consumers.

Sembada 188 is the most productive hybrid rice variety among the imported seeds. Imported from Indonesia through Yaz & Wyn Enterprise, the sole distributor in Brunei, it matures in 110 days and yields 4-6 metric tons per hectare. The plants grow up to 110 cm and have about 14 stalks, each averaging 26.8 cm. Each 1000 rice seeds weigh approximately 28.4 grams. After comparing with other varieties like Sembada B9, Sembada 626, Sembada 168, and Sembada 989, Sembada 188 proved to be the highest yielding, producing twice as much as other varieties, including Laila.

MRQ76

MRQ76 has great carbohydrate content among local rice varieties in Brunei, making it suitable for those with high energy needs and for preparing porridge for infants.

MRQ stands for “MARDI Rice Quality”, referring to a series of fragrant rice varieties developed by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). It matures in 120 days and yields 4-6 metric tons per hectare. The plant grows up to 99 cm with about 14 stalks averaging 22 cm in length, and each 1000 seeds weighs approximately 25.5 grams. A 2021 study found MRQ76 to be the best-performing variety under drought conditions, yielding the most grain among 17 varities tested. It is recommended for drought-prone areas or non-rainy seasons.
